A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, has been killed by gunmen following a confrontation involving members of music star David Adeleke’s, popularly known as Davido, security team in Osogbo, Osun State.

Yusuf was reportedly shot at Ita-Olokan area of the state capital at about 4pm on Wednesday.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday, saying preliminary findings linked the shooting to a confrontation that occurred shortly after a visit by Governor Ademola Adeleke and Davido to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.

According to the police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, trouble reportedly started after Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to approach Davido but was stopped by members of the singer’s security team.

Ojelabi said the development attracted other suspected gang members, who allegedly joined the confrontation and temporarily blocked the palace entrance, disrupting the movement of the governor’s convoy.

The suspects later reportedly dispersed from the area. However, the police said Yusuf was allegedly shot at Ita-Olokan as the suspected gang members fled the vicinity.

Yusuf, who was said to be a resident of the Oke-Ayepe area of Osogbo, was found critically injured and lying in a pool of blood after the shooting.

Police officers were immediately deployed to the scene following a distress call, while the victim was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.

He was subsequently pronounced dead by doctors on duty.

The police command said investigation had commenced, with efforts underway to track down the suspects and bring them before the court.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Samuel Etaifo, condemned the killing, describing it as a “dastardly act” and assuring residents that the command would deploy all necessary resources to apprehend those responsible.

The command also urged anyone with credible information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or use the official communication channels of the Osun State Police Command.

The police stressed that the identities and allegations contained in its preliminary account remain subject to further investigation.
