The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid reported moves by some lawmakers to remove him.

Agbebaku’s resignation took effect on Monday, further deepening the leadership uncertainty within the state legislature.

His media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, confirmed the development in a Facebook post, announcing that the Speaker had stepped down.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS,” she wrote.

The aide, however, did not disclose the specific reasons behind the Speaker’s decision, saying more information about the circumstances surrounding his resignation would be released later.

His exit comes at a time of reported internal moves to impeach him, raising fresh concerns over the stability of the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Lawmakers are now expected to begin the process of selecting Agbebaku’s successor as the Assembly works to resolve the emerging leadership vacuum.

Further details on the development are expected.
