The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, arrived in Abuja on Monday for the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting ahead of its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, held in the Maitama district of the Federal Capital Territory, brought together party candidates, top political figures, leaders and supporters from different parts of the country.
Dickson and the NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, were warmly received by supporters on arrival, while Obi and Kwankwaso were welcomed with a remix of Olamide’s popular song, Wo.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, appeared in an all-black outfit paired with a matching cap, while Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate, wore a white babanriga and his signature red-and-white Kwankwasiyya cap.
The NEC meeting is one of several activities lined up by the party for Monday as it intensifies efforts to strengthen its structures and mobilise support ahead of the 2027 polls.
Other scheduled activities include the commissioning of the party’s newly acquired national secretariat in Abuja, the inauguration of its National Campaign Council and the presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates contesting the presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state House of Assembly elections.
The party is also expected to host a dinner following the inauguration of the campaign council.
The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced the programme in a statement on Sunday, noting that the activities would also feature the party’s third NEC meeting.
According to Director, the party will present its statement of account during the meeting as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
He said the National Treasurer would present the financial report, adding that the party had faced financial constraints amid the country’s economic challenges.
Director further disclosed that about 80 per cent of the party’s candidates were unable to afford Expression of Interest forms due to poverty, hunger and deprivation, prompting the NDC to provide the forms free of charge to affected aspirants.
The activities form part of the party’s broader efforts to consolidate its political structures, strengthen internal coordination and prepare its candidates and supporters for the 2027 general elections.
