The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and observe preventive measures following the confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory.

Disu also directed police officers nationwide to comply with appropriate infection prevention protocols while performing their duties and ensure that suspected cases are promptly referred to qualified health professionals.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, who said the police chief emphasised public awareness, personal hygiene and collaboration with health authorities to prevent the spread of the disease.

The IGP urged Nigerians to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, avoid contact with the blood and other body fluids of suspected Ebola patients, and stay away from objects that may have been contaminated.

He also warned against touching or washing the bodies of persons suspected to have died from the disease, advising anyone who may have been exposed to the virus to seek guidance from health authorities immediately.

According to the statement, individuals who develop symptoms after possible exposure should avoid physical contact with others and contact the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention through its toll-free helpline, 6232, for assistance.

Disu further stressed the need to protect suspected patients, their contacts and healthcare workers from discrimination, cautioning against stigmatisation during efforts to contain the outbreak.

He urged members of the public to cooperate with contact-tracing teams, provide accurate information when required and avoid spreading unverified reports that could trigger unnecessary fear and panic.

The police chief also advised Nigerians to obtain updates from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the NCDC and other authorised public health agencies.

He assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to work with relevant health authorities to protect lives and maintain public order throughout the response to the outbreak.

Disu reiterated that preventing the spread of Ebola required collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to stay informed, follow official health guidance and show consideration for those affected by the disease.
