Notorious bandit leader Ado Aleiro has reportedly suffered a major setback following a deadly encounter in Doma village, Katsina State, where his son, eight other family members and about 30 motorcycles belonging to his group were allegedly lost.
Security intelligence obtained by security analyst Zagazola Makama indicated that the incident significantly affected the group’s manpower and ability to move across the region.
According to an intelligence report dated August 9, none of the estimated 30 motorcycles deployed by the bandits during the encounter reportedly returned.
The riders operating the motorcycles were also said to have been neutralised during the clash.
The loss of the motorcycles is considered a significant blow to the group because such vehicles are commonly used by armed groups in the North-West to move through difficult terrain, transport supplies and evade security operations.
The intelligence report further indicated that, by 3:51 p.m. on Sunday, Aleiro was reportedly travelling alone on a motorcycle around the Sakya Dutse, Higi and Asaula areas.
Security sources were said to be monitoring his movements to establish his destination and assess the strength of his remaining network.
Aleiro was also reportedly worried about the security of a proposed site for illegal mining activities at Gidan Buhari in Chadiya Ward, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The report said the bandit leader feared the location could be attacked by Yansakai operating from Tsafe town.
The reported losses in Katsina have heightened concerns over the vulnerability of the group’s remaining members and operational locations.
Security sources believe the development could provide an opportunity for security agencies to intensify surveillance and operations against the weakened network before its members can reorganise.
The loss of the motorcycles could further limit the group’s ability to move personnel and supplies quickly across remote areas or escape during security operations.
The development comes as security forces continue operations against bandit groups across Zamfara, Katsina and neighbouring states under Operation FANSAN YANMA.
Security agencies are expected to maintain close surveillance of Aleiro and his associates while working to establish the full extent of the losses suffered by the group and prevent surviving members from regrouping.
