ABDUCTED BENUE CATHOLIC SEMINARIAN ESCAPES, REUNITES WITH FAMILY

A Catholic seminarian of the Otukpo Diocese in Benue State, Kelvin Ochai, has regained his freedom after escaping from the kidnappers who held him captive following his abduction in Otukpo Local Government Area.

The Diocese confirmed his safe return in a statement issued on Saturday by its Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, announcing that the seminarian had reunited with his family unharmed.

According to the statement, Ochai escaped from his captors on Friday evening and walked to Aliade in neighbouring Gwer East Local Government Area, where he was later reunited with his relatives.

“Through the prayers of the people of God, Kelvin escaped from the custody of his abductors on the evening of Friday, 31st July, 2026, and made his way to Aliade, Gwer East LGA of Benue State. He has since been safely reunited with his family and is unharmed,” Itodo stated.

The Diocese described the seminarian’s return as a testimony to God’s faithfulness, attributing his safe escape to divine intervention and the prayers offered by Christians and other supporters throughout his period in captivity.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, expressed gratitude to priests, religious groups, parishioners and all well-wishers who stood with the Diocese in prayer and support during the ordeal.

He said the seminarian’s safe return reflected God’s mercy and protection, while appreciating everyone who showed concern for the victim and his family.

Ochai was kidnapped by armed men in Asa III community of Otukpo Local Government Area, one of several parts of Benue State that have experienced repeated cases of kidnapping and violent attacks in recent years.

The Diocese did not disclose how the seminarian escaped from the abductors or whether any ransom was requested or paid before his release.

As of the time this report was filed, security agencies had not released an official statement on the incident.

The seminarian’s return has been welcomed with relief and celebration within the Catholic community, even as concerns continue to mount over the growing insecurity and rising cases of abduction across Benue State.
