Two serving police officers and a dismissed police sergeant have been arrested in Abuja following allegations of extortion and other corrupt practices.
The suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after the police received a distress call concerning alleged extortion of motorists at Transcorp Junction in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a situation report from the Maitama Division, the complaint was received at about 2:50 p.m., prompting the Divisional Crime Officer to deploy a team to the location.
The operation led to the arrest of ASP Michael Godwin, AP No. 188981, attached to Force Transport, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Inspector Demeka’a Yarkwan, AP No. 346638, attached to Wuse Division; and Sergeant William Udokang, a former police officer who had been dismissed from the Force.
Police said 15 drivers’ licences belonging to different members of the public were recovered from the suspects.
Following the recovery, investigators began contacting some of the licence owners’ next of kin to establish how the documents were obtained and determine the circumstances surrounding their seizure.
Preliminary findings reportedly indicated that some of the affected motorists had their licences taken by the officers and were allegedly forced to pay amounts ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦183,000 to have them released.
Authorities said efforts were ongoing to trace all owners of the recovered licences and obtain further information that could help investigators establish what happened.
The arrest comes amid continued concerns over allegations of extortion and misconduct involving some law enforcement personnel.
The suspects remain under investigation, and the allegations against them are yet to be proven in court.
The Maitama Division has forwarded its report to superior authorities for further directives and appropriate action.
