Former Barcelona winger and Spain World Cup winner Pedro Rodriguez has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.
Pedro confirmed his decision on Wednesday, bringing the curtain down on a career that saw him win major honours in Spain, England and Italy.
The Tenerife-born forward was part of Spain’s squad that lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and also won the 2012 European Championship with the national team.
His most successful years came at Barcelona, where he rose through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut in 2008.
Under former manager Pep Guardiola, Pedro became an important member of the Barcelona team that made history by winning six trophies in 2009.
During his time with the Catalan giants, he won three UEFA Champions League titles and five La Liga trophies. He also scored in Barcelona’s 2011 Champions League final victory over Manchester United.
Pedro made 321 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 99 goals while playing alongside some of the club’s greatest stars, including Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Pedro described being part of the team as a privilege.
“Being part of the best Barca side in history was a privilege, we won everything and amazed the world,” he said in his farewell video.
After leaving Barcelona in 2015, Pedro joined Chelsea, where he added a Premier League title to his collection in 2017. He also helped the London club win the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League.
He later continued his career in Italy with Roma before moving to Lazio, where he made more than 200 appearances.
Announcing his retirement, Pedro said he believed it was time to begin a new chapter of his life.
“I feel that the moment has come. The moment to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” he said.
“I leave proud of having lived my dream and of all the people who were by my side to make it come true.”
Pedro earned 65 caps for Spain and scored 17 international goals, ending his career as a World Cup and European Championship winner.
