The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled plans for the sixth edition of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers CARSPO 2026, with a strong focus on election security and internal security management.
The conference is scheduled to hold in Owerri, Imo State, from September 21 to 23, 2026, under the theme: “Developing a Nigerian Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections.”
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing in Abuja.
He explained that the conference, which commenced in 2019, has remained a key platform for strategic reflection, peer review, and professional engagement among senior police officers.
According to him, “The conference has over the years provided an opportunity for the Force to examine contemporary security challenges and develop strategies for improving policing and internal security management.”
Iniedu noted that the 2026 edition is particularly significant as it will enable senior police managers and other stakeholders to critically assess security challenges associated with elections and develop practical, forward-looking responses.
He further stated that, “The conference will focus on strengthening the institutional capacity of the Nigerian Police Force for effective election security management.”
He added that discussions will centre on contemporary policing strategies, digital technologies, intelligence-led policing, police-community partnerships, and other innovative approaches aimed at improving police operations before, during, and after elections.
The FPRO also disclosed that the event will bring together senior government officials, security and law enforcement leaders, policing experts, representatives of relevant institutions, development partners, and other key stakeholders.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, in Owerri.
Iniedu said the conference will also provide a platform for senior police officers to engage with experts whose knowledge and experience will contribute to strengthening election security and broader internal security management.
He described CARSPO as a critical component of the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing reform agenda, particularly in enhancing professionalism, strategic leadership, and operational readiness.
The conference is expected to produce practical strategies for safeguarding voters, electoral officials, candidates, observers, electoral materials, and the general public throughout the electoral process.
Also speaking, Shina Philips, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lenders Consult International, expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for their continued support and partnership.
Philips emphasised the importance of continued collaboration among the Police Force, government institutions, private-sector partners, and other stakeholders in strengthening policing and internal security in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Police Force also acknowledged the role of the media in informing the public and strengthening confidence in the country’s security architecture.
It called for continued cooperation and responsible reportage as preparations for CARSPO 2026 progress, stressing the importance of collective efforts toward a peaceful, safe, and secure electoral environment.
