The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dismissed a report claiming he urged Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.
Obi described the claim as false, saying he has never opposed improved remuneration for members of the armed forces.
In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, Obi said his position has consistently been that Nigeria’s security personnel should receive better welfare, adequate equipment, protection and motivation.
He said the report suggesting that he asked soldiers to turn down salary increments was “entirely untrue.”
According to the former Anambra State governor, his respect for members of the Nigerian military remains firm, particularly those serving under difficult conditions to protect the country.
Obi said his concerns about the welfare of security personnel have previously been demonstrated through his criticism of situations where soldiers are exposed to danger without adequate support.
He recalled questioning how troops could be left vulnerable after some soldiers were reportedly lost to insurgents amid concerns over delayed rescue efforts.
The NDC candidate said that if elected president in 2027, the safety, welfare, resources and dignity of Nigeria’s military personnel would receive serious attention under his administration.
Obi also urged Nigerians to disregard the report, stressing that criticism of weaknesses in the country’s security system should not be interpreted as opposition to better pay for soldiers.
He has repeatedly called for increased investment and accountability in key sectors, including security, education, healthcare and infrastructure.
According to him, Nigerian soldiers and other security personnel who risk their lives daily deserve the full backing of government and adequate resources to carry out their duties.
“Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” Obi said.
He added that under his leadership, security personnel would not be left without adequate protection when confronted with serious threats.
Obi urged the public to disregard what he described as a misleading report, reaffirming his commitment to presenting what he called a clear vision for a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
