Anambra State Police Command has a new Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, who officially assumed office on Monday, August 10, 2026, as the 36th police commissioner of the state.
His deployment followed a strategic posting approved by the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.
Ama succeeds AIG Ikioye Orutugu, who retired from the Nigeria Police Force after his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
The new commissioner is a senior police officer with more than three decades of experience in the Nigeria Police Force, having served in intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command positions.
Before his deployment to Anambra, Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had earlier served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Ama holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Jos.
He joined the Police Force as a Cadet Superintendent of Police after undergoing training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
Throughout his career, he has held several strategic positions, including Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID Abuja; Commanding Officer of No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; and officer in charge of Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia.
His previous postings also include Commanding Officer of No. 11 Police Mobile Force, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer in Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the FCT; Coordinator of Courses at the Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer of No. 26 Police Mobile Force, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Ota, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Command.
The new commissioner has also undertaken several professional and strategic courses in Nigeria and abroad.
These include the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; as well as various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
Ama has also received recognition for his operational courage and effectiveness.
In 2007, he received a commendation for bravery, courage and gallantry following an operation in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, during which an AK-47 rifle was recovered after a shootout with armed robbers.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Nigeria Psychological Association and the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Speaking after taking over, CP Ama pledged to build on the security gains already recorded in Anambra State and deepen cooperation between the Police and other security agencies.
He also identified traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, women and other stakeholders as key partners in the fight against crime.
The new commissioner assured residents, visitors and businesses across the state that the Command would strengthen efforts to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law and maintain a secure environment.
He called for continued support and cooperation from residents, stressing that effective policing requires partnership between security agencies and the communities they serve.
