Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed concern over what he described as a suspicious deposit into one of his personal bank accounts, warning that the incident could point to a serious breach of his confidential banking information.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku revealed that an unknown individual transferred money into his private account with the description, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
According to the statement, neither Atiku nor his campaign team requested, approved or had prior knowledge of the payment or the identity of the sender.
The former vice president noted that the account involved is a strictly private one whose details are not publicly known, raising questions about how an unknown person obtained the confidential banking information.
He warned that if the banking details of a former vice president and a leading presidential contender could be accessed without authorisation, then the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.
Atiku further suggested that the information may have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to sensitive financial records, describing such a possibility as deeply disturbing.
He cautioned that any unlawful disclosure of confidential banking information could expose account holders to threats such as kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, fraud and other criminal activities.
The ADC presidential candidate said security agencies had been informed of the development, describing it as one of several suspicious incidents emerging as political activities gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also urged Nigerians to ignore what he called attempts to tarnish his image, insisting that such tactics were aimed at distracting the public from the real issues.
Atiku maintained that he remains committed to offering credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges despite the latest development.
