The United States on Sunday carried out another round of airstrikes against Iran, saying the operation was intended to punish Tehran following the deaths of two American service members in Jordan — the first US military fatalities since the latest conflict with Iran escalated.

In response, Iran announced it had launched retaliatory drone attacks on two US military bases in Kuwait. According to the Iranian army, the strikes hit an ammunition depot at Camp Udairi as well as Patriot radar and air surveillance systems at Ali Al Salem Air Base.

Tehran also said its latest offensive followed more than a week of sustained US attacks, which it claimed targeted key infrastructure including an airport, railway station and several bridges.

Efforts to secure a preliminary ceasefire have reportedly broken down as both sides remain locked in a standoff over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping route vital to global oil exports.
Iran further claimed it launched fresh attacks in Jordan. 

Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that two American service members were killed on Friday while “defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.”

The command added that another service member remains missing.

The latest casualties bring the total number of confirmed US military deaths to 16 since the conflict, which began with US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

The US military said Sunday’s bombardment marked the eighth straight night of strikes on Iranian targets, including units allegedly responsible for the attack that killed the American troops in Jordan.

According to CENTCOM, the operation was launched to “swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan last night.”
Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim also reported US strikes on Sirik, a port city located along the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran.

‘Unforgettable lesson’
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father after he was killed during the opening wave of US-Israeli attacks, vowed to teach the United States an “unforgettable lesson”, according to a statement aired on state television.

Senior military adviser Major General Mohsen Rezaei warned that Tehran would resume “full-scale offensive operations” if American attacks continued over the coming days.

Iran’s central military commander, Ali Abdollahi, also cautioned that any further US aggression would face a “decisive and devastating response”, state television reported.
The renewed fighting followed earlier Iranian attacks on vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz.

After the conflict began, Iran shut the strategic waterway, turning it into a key bargaining tool in negotiations with Washington. The US later responded by reimposing a blockade on Iranian ports.
Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured since the latest round of fighting began.

Growing fears in Kuwait
Kuwait accused Iran of attacking civilian infrastructure, raising concerns among residents that the conflict could spread further across the Gulf.

“The demand for water and canned goods has increased since this morning amid fears that services or supply chains will be affected,” Kuwait resident Hassan Rayan, 61, said Saturday.

Another resident, Ali Mahmoud, 46, said, “the streets and beaches were almost empty, even though it is a holiday.”
Iran’s military also claimed responsibility for strikes on an air base used by US forces in Bahrain, according to the country’s state broadcaster.

In Jordan, Iranian state television reported that fuel storage facilities at the Al-Azraq US base had been targeted. A day earlier, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they attacked US aircraft stationed there using missiles and drones.

Jordan’s military said it intercepted 10 missiles on Saturday after shooting down at least three the previous day.
Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have stalled despite mediation attempts aimed at bringing both sides back to negotiations.

US President Donald Trump has previously threatened to strike critical Iranian infrastructure, although Washington has not officially confirmed any such operations beyond the latest air campaign.

Power facilities hit
Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported that US strikes in Hormozgan province killed three people and injured eight on Saturday.

In neighbouring Khuzestan province, local authorities said eight people had lost their lives over the past 10 days, according to Tasnim.

Iran also accused the United States of targeting electricity infrastructure and desalination facilities in the village of Bonji, saying the attacks disrupted drinking water supplies to several communities in the country’s south.
