Nigeria’s Super Eagles have retained their 26th position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings but have slipped to fourth among African teams in the updated rankings released on Monday.
The three-time African champions remain in the same position globally after their most recent match—a 2-1 international friendly defeat to Portugal in June. With no competitive games played since then, Nigeria’s world ranking was unaffected.
However, the Super Eagles lost ground on the African rankings as Egypt moved ahead following an impressive campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Pharaohs reached the Round of 16 before exiting the tournament after a hard-fought 3-2 defeat to eventual runners-up Argentina.
Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked nation after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals. The Atlas Lions also climbed one place in the global rankings, moving from seventh to sixth.
Senegal continue to occupy second place in Africa despite dropping three places in the world rankings, while Algeria sit fifth on the continent after slipping one spot globally.
On the global stage, Spain returned to the top of the FIFA rankings after winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The newly crowned champions replaced Argentina at the summit following their victory over the South Americans in the tournament’s final.
Argentina now rank second in the world, with France, England and Brazil completing the top five.
FIFA is scheduled to release its next men’s world rankings on October 7, 2026.
