The Police Service Commission (PSC) has sent a monitoring team to Osun State to supervise the conduct of police officers assigned to the August 15 governorship election.
The delegation is headed by retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Taiwo Lakanu, a member of the commission and Chairman of its Standing Committee on Police Matters.
The team is expected to monitor police personnel throughout the electoral period and ensure that officers comply with established rules guiding election duties.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu.
According to the PSC, the deployment is intended to promote discipline, professionalism and impartiality among police officers while strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
The commission directed all officers deployed to Osun to remain politically neutral and respect the rights of citizens to participate freely and peacefully in the election.
It said the monitoring team would ensure that police personnel maintain the highest standards of professional conduct before, during and after the polls.
The PSC also warned that any officer found engaging in conduct capable of undermining the credibility of the election would face disciplinary action.
The commission further tasked the police with protecting voters, maintaining peace and ensuring that citizens can exercise their constitutional rights without intimidation.
The monitoring exercise comes as 14 political parties prepare to participate in the governorship election being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Nigeria Police Force has already deployed 15,000 personnel across the state for the election.
