The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that prospective corps members must obtain clearance from the National Electronic Registration Database (NERD) before they can be mobilised for national service.
The directive, issued on Monday through the scheme’s official X account, forms part of measures aimed at strengthening the verification process ahead of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ orientation exercise.
According to the NYSC, prospective corps members who fail to secure the required clearance may experience delays in their mobilisation.
“This is to inform PCMs (Prospective Corps Members) that without NERD clearance, no NYSC. Get your NERD clearance early. Avoid delays in your mobilisation,” the scheme stated.
Reaffirming the policy, the agency added, “NERD clearance is compulsory for all PCMs. No NERD clearance, No NYSC!!!”
Although the NYSC did not explain the procedure for obtaining the clearance, the latest directive signals tighter verification measures as preparations intensify for the next service year.
The announcement comes shortly after the scheme unveiled plans for the mobilisation of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ prospective corps members, urging tertiary institutions and eligible graduates to complete all necessary registration and documentation before the orientation programme begins.
The development also follows a recent travel advisory issued by the NYSC, warning prospective corps members against embarking on night journeys to orientation camps because of security concerns.
The scheme advised those travelling long distances to break their trips where necessary and spend the night in secure locations or approved military and security facilities instead of travelling after dark.
The latest directives underscore the NYSC’s commitment to ensuring a more transparent mobilisation process while prioritising the safety of prospective corps members as preparations for the orientation exercise gather momentum.
