Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kukawa, Borno State, killing more than 25 terrorists and recovering weapons and ammunition.
The Nigerian Army said the terrorists launched the attack on troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion from four different directions, but were met with strong resistance.
According to the Army, the troops responded with superior firepower, tactical manoeuvres and coordinated battlefield operations, supported by the Air Component.
The military said the joint response inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists and forced surviving fighters to retreat from the area.
It, however, disclosed that some soldiers were killed during the fierce encounter.
In a statement signed by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, Maiduguri, Captain Mohammed Goni, the Army said preliminary assessment showed that more than 25 terrorists were neutralised, while 14 bodies had so far been recovered.
The statement added that troops conducting an operation in the area also recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles.
“Preliminary assessment indicates that over 25 terrorists were neutralised, with 14 bodies recovered so far.
“During exploitation of the area, troops recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles,” the statement read.
The Army said troops were still combing the area to recover more weapons, locate fleeing terrorists and prevent them from regrouping.
It also expressed condolences to the families of soldiers who lost their lives during the operation.
“The Nigerian Army extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and stands with them at this difficult moment.
“Their courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty will remain an enduring testament to their service to the nation. May their souls rest in peace,” it added.
The Army said the outcome of the operation demonstrated the readiness and resilience of its troops in the North-East Theatre, while highlighting the importance of coordinated air and ground operations in tackling terrorist activities.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on terrorists and other criminal elements through sustained patrols, intelligence-led operations and coordinated offensives.
The military added that such operations would continue in collaboration with other security agencies and sister Services to disrupt terrorist networks, protect communities and strengthen security across the region.
