The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to publish the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general elections online following concerns over public access to the document.
The commission disclosed this in a statement on Monday, explaining that the online publication would complement the physical display of the register conducted at registration areas across the country from October 9 to 15.
Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the decision was intended to improve accessibility, strengthen transparency and boost public confidence in the electoral process.
He explained that the register would be accessible through the commission’s online portal at https://display.inecnigeria.org, allowing more Nigerians to review the preliminary list.
The decision followed appeals from citizens and other stakeholders who called for an online version of the register in addition to the physical display.
INEC said the initial exercise was conducted in line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026, which provides registered voters with the opportunity to verify their details and submit claims or objections where necessary.
The commission added that it was currently reviewing submissions received during the exercise before proceeding with the certification and release of the final register.
According to Haruna, the final register of voters is scheduled for publication on December 15, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the implementation of the Electoral Act, 2026, in its efforts to deliver credible elections.
The commission also acknowledged the continued engagement of Nigerians and electoral stakeholders, describing their contributions as important to improving the electoral process.
