The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication falsely attributed to the commission, claiming to be a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states.
The affected states are Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.
INEC raised the alarm in a public notice issued on Monday and circulated through its official social media platforms, clarifying that the publication did not originate from the electoral body.
The commission urged members of the public to disregard the purported announcement and avoid circulating it, warning that the false information could mislead voters and other stakeholders.
It further advised Nigerians to verify electoral updates through its official website, press releases, public notices and verified social media accounts.
INEC listed its official website as inecnigeria.org, its X and Instagram handles as @inecnigeria, its Facebook page as INEC Nigeria, and its news portal as inecnews.com.
For enquiries and clarification, the commission provided its contact details as 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629, and email address iccc@inec.gov.ng.
The electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate information and called on the public to remain vigilant against misleading publications concerning electoral activities.
The warning comes days after INEC released the final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections, following reports that some candidates were missing from the published documents.
Among those reportedly omitted were the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Ladi Adebutu and Isa Pantami, respectively. The published lists did not specify the reasons for their omission.
