The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for deeper collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to strengthen public confidence in policing through effective communication, professionalism and accountability.
Disu made the call on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when he received a delegation of the NIPR, led by its President and Chairman of Council, Dr Ike Neliaku, fnipr, on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the NIPR delegation to brief the IGP on Nigeria’s hosting of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum and Africa Charter Forum, scheduled to hold at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
The forum is expected to bring together more than 3,000 delegates from 126 member countries of the Global Alliance for Public Relations.
During the visit, the NIPR delegation sought the support of the Nigeria Police Force for security arrangements and coverage of the international event. The institute also invited the IGP to deliver a keynote address and encouraged police officers to register and participate in the forum.
The IGP, while responding, said the Police and NIPR have complementary roles in shaping public perception and promoting trust in public institutions.
He stressed that the conduct of individual police officers contributes significantly to the image of the Force, noting that professionalism, fairness, transparency and effective engagement with members of the public remain critical to building confidence in policing.
Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to policing by consent and a service-driven approach anchored on professionalism, empathy, accountability and respect for fundamental human rights.
He further sought the NIPR’s partnership in providing specialised communication training for police personnel and developing a coordinated communication framework capable of effectively highlighting the sacrifices, dedication and contributions of police officers to public safety and national security.
The delegation included the Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association, Dr Omoniyi Ibietan, fnipr; Dr Suleiman Haruna, mnipr; Mr Maryam Sanusi, fnipr; Mrs Olubunmi Badejo, fnipr; Commandant Olusola Odumosu; Chief Uzoma Oyegbadu, fnipr; Chief Moji Makanjuola, MFR, fnipr; Mr Stanley Ogadigo, fnipr, among other members.
The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to strengthening partnerships with professional bodies and other stakeholders towards enhancing public trust, improving public safety and advancing national security.
