A fire outbreak in the Senate wing of the National Assembly was swiftly contained on Wednesday, preventing it from spreading and causing significant damage.
The incident occurred in the kitchen section adjoining Senate Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), chaired by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa as the Northeast representative on the commission’s board.
Smoke from the fire quickly filled the area, causing a brief commotion among those present.
However, the prompt intervention of Senator Ekpenyong and Senator Salihu Mustapha helped bring the situation under control before it escalated.
Preliminary reports indicated that the fire originated from a microwave oven that had been left switched on in the kitchen.
With the swift response of the lawmakers and support staff, the fire was extinguished without any reported injuries or major damage to the facility.
