The Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Katsina is facing growing pressure as an increase in suspected and confirmed diphtheria cases continues to drive more critically ill children to the facility.

The hospital’s children’s ward has reportedly exceeded its available capacity following the steady arrival of patients referred from various healthcare centres across Katsina State.

In a statement released on Saturday, the hospital management said the outbreak had placed an exceptional strain on its facilities, particularly the paediatric ward, where medical personnel are attending to an increasing number of children requiring urgent treatment.

Despite the limited bed spaces and rising number of patients, the hospital said it was taking steps to ensure that those affected receive appropriate and timely medical care.

The management said efforts were ongoing to create additional space and manage the influx of patients despite the pressure on existing facilities.

It also commended doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers for their dedication, saying their commitment had remained critical to providing lifesaving care to seriously ill children amid the outbreak.

FTH Katsina further appealed for closer cooperation between healthcare institutions, government authorities and other stakeholders involved in the response to the outbreak.

The hospital stressed that a coordinated approach was necessary to strengthen the response, contain the spread of diphtheria and protect children who remain most vulnerable to the disease.

The facility said it would continue to support efforts to control the outbreak and manage affected patients.

Meanwhile, the hospital has not released figures on the number of children currently receiving treatment or the total number of confirmed cases recorded across the state.

The Katsina State Primary Healthcare Agency is expected to provide further details at a press briefing scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the Primary Healthcare Coordination Centre.

The briefing is expected to provide an update on the extent of the outbreak and the measures being deployed by health authorities to prevent further transmission across the state.
