Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State narrowly escaped death on Saturday after suspected Boko Haram terrorists ambushed his security convoy along the Jakana-Mainok expressway in Borno State.
The attack led to the killing of one policeman, while six persons suffered injuries.
According to reports, the security team was on the convoy that escorted Buni to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital for the 24th Convocation ceremony of the University of Maiduguri, where Vice-President Kashim Shettima was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree.
However, the terrorists did not know that only the security team returned to Yobe State after the event.
The governor stayed back in Maiduguri in preparation for another trip to Abuja for an official engagement.
The attack was confirmed by the governor’s Spokesman, Mamman Mohammed.
Mohammed said the governor’s security team ran into the ambush.
“They fired some shots, but the security escorting the governor’s official vehicles back to Damaturu exchanged fire with them, but three policemen sustained injuries,” he disclosed.
He added that the security operatives could repel the attack and that those injured were responding to treatment.
