In a startling revelation, Bianca Ojukwu, wife of the late Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, has unveiled a haunting secret buried deep within the soil of Anambra State. Through a heartfelt statement shared on her Facebook page titled ‘A Mass Grave Site Discovered in Anambra Sealed Off for Forensic Investigation,’ Bianca disclosed the chilling existence of a mass grave, a solemn testament to the darkest chapters of the region’s history.
Though the precise location of this grave remains undisclosed, Bianca emphasized that the discovery emerged from compelling testimonies presented to the Commission of Inquiry. This commission, named the Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission, was established by the state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, in June 2022, tasked with investigating the violent agitations and unrest that had plagued the state and the broader South East.
Bianca Ojukwu, the secretary of the Commission, revealed that 322 individuals were verified as victims of the violence, their fates sealed through the heartbreaking accounts of witnesses. During the commission’s extensive hearings, 39 witnesses testified on oath, accompanied by 243 exhibits, painting a vivid yet harrowing picture of the past. In her statement, Bianca expressed the Commission’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind these tragedies.
In an effort to shed light on the obscured past, Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, mandated the sealing of the suspected mass grave site for forensic investigation by pathologists. This solemn task aims to identify the victims and illuminate the circumstances surrounding their untimely demise.
Moreover, the Commission’s tireless pursuit of justice led to the establishment of a Bureau of Missing Persons, a crucial initiative to document the missing and unravel the mysteries of their disappearance. The revelation, although shocking, serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, demanding accountability and healing for the afflicted souls of Anambra.
As the community grapples with the weight of this revelation, the state government remains on the precipice of understanding the full extent of this hidden tragedy, awaiting the formal report from the Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission. Meanwhile, the echoes of the past reverberate, urging society to confront its history and pave the way for a future built on truth, justice, and enduring peace.
