The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Jos, Plateau State, has declared the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, as the winner for Plateau South Senatorial district.
Lalong was the former Governor of the State and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC),
Chairman of the three-member panel, Justice Mahmoud Tukur, who gave the verdict on Monday, held that the votes scored by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Napoleon Bali, in the February 25 election were wasted as PDP had no valid structure in the State at the time of the nomination.
In another judgement, the tribunal declared Fom Dalyop of the Labour Party (LP) as the duly elected representative of the Barikin Ladi/ Riyom Federal constituency.
However, on the other grounds of over-voting and non-compliance with the electoral laws, the panel ruled that the petitioners could not prove the allegations.
It would be recalled that APC and LP candidates asked the Tribunal to nullify the election of Mr. Bali (PDP) and Peter Gyendeng (PDP) on the grounds that the PDP did not have a proper party structure and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not comply with the new Electoral Act and guidelines as of the time of conducting the election.
