In a tragic incident on Thursday morning, an elderly woman, believed to be in her 80s, lost her life in a partial collapse of a two-storey building at number 34 Oloto Street, Borno Way, off Freeman Street, Oyingbo, Lagos. The woman, yet to be identified, died on the spot due to the impact of the collapse.
Eyewitness Mr. Kehinde Adeboye reported that the incident occurred around 7:45 am, prompting the response of sympathizers and emergency responders to the scene. The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed the casualty but noted that there were no further reported injuries.
LASEMA received distress calls around 8:30 am, and the rescue team arrived at 8:42 am. The preliminary findings indicate that an internal suspended beam in a room collapsed due to the aging and lack of maintenance of the structure.
Regrettably, the elderly woman lost her life as a result of the partial collapse. A search and rescue operation, involving the joint efforts of LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and paramedics, was ongoing as of press time at 10 am. The scene has been cordoned off, and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABCA) has been contacted for further action.
The incident highlights the importance of building maintenance and structural integrity in preventing such tragedies.
