Jenni Hermoso, the midfielder of the Spain women’s football team, has come forward to defend Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales after he faced criticism for kissing her on the lips during the team’s Women’s World Cup victory celebration.
The incident occurred after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the final, where they secured their first-ever Women’s World Cup title.
Rubiales received backlash on social media for the kiss, which took place during the medal ceremony. Despite the negative comments, Hermoso defended Rubiales’ actions and explained that the kiss was a spontaneous display of affection due to the immense joy of winning the World Cup.
During an Instagram live stream after the match, Hermoso shared her perspective, noting that the kiss was a “natural gesture of affection.”
She expressed her belief that the moment should not be excessively scrutinized, especially considering the team’s remarkable achievement of winning the World Cup.
Hermoso emphasized the positive relationship she shares with President Rubiales and praised his exemplary behavior towards the team.
She described the kiss as a genuine expression of gratitude and friendship, emphasizing that it should not overshadow the team’s victory.
“The president and I have a great relationship, his behavior with all of us has been outstanding, and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude,” Hermoso stated.
She emphasized the importance of staying focused on the team’s achievement and not getting sidetracked by discussions about the kiss
