Spain and Japan became the first two qualified selections for the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup after securing convincing wins in their respective matches.
In a collective demonstration against Zambia, the Spanish players, coached by Jorge Vilda, displayed their prowess, dominating the match against the modest Zambian team, ranked 77th in FIFA rankings.
The Reds opened their festival with a beautiful long shot by Teresa Abelleira in the 9th minute. Jennifer Hermoso (13th, 70th) and Alba Redondo (69th, 85th) each scored twice, further solidifying Spain’s victory.
Notably, Spanish coach Jorge Vilda made a significant decision by including Alexia Putellas, a two-time Golden Ball winner, in the lineup. Putellas had been recovering from a serious knee injury and her inclusion proved to be fruitful as she delighted with an assist on the second goal before being replaced at halftime.
Zambia, on the other hand, faced their second defeat in the tournament, following a heavy 5-0 loss against Japan in their first match.
The team has been embroiled in controversy after players accused their coach, Bruce Mwape, of sexual abuse dating back to September 2022.
Additionally, the players have highlighted the non-payment of federal bonuses for two years, adding to the tense context surrounding the team’s performance.
With Spain and Japan securing their places in the round of 16, the Women’s World Cup continues to showcase intense competition and skillful performances, captivating fans and viewers worldwide.
