In response to the alarming escalation of violence in Kogi East, a group of distinguished professionals from Kogi State, known as Club 582, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, to conduct a thorough investigation into the continuous wave of senseless killings and intimidation faced by the local population.
Expressing deep concern over the recent tragedy in Anyigba, the social and commercial hub of Igala land, Club 582 issued a press statement condemning the violence. The incident, which occurred on a Tuesday morning, raised troubling questions about the safety of the community, despite the presence of armed troops deployed under ‘Operation Safe Conduct.’
According to Samuel Onekutu, the president of Club 582, conflicting reports have surfaced regarding the incident. One account suggested that rogue troops, allegedly affiliated with the ruling political party, disguised themselves as security agents and attacked the residence of a political opponent, resulting in the tragic deaths of five individuals, including a policeman. Another version countered this, asserting that a combined force of law enforcement officers had intervened to suppress the activities of thugs in the area.
Acknowledging the federal government’s efforts to maintain peace and security during recent elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states, Club 582 commended the government’s commitment to eradicating thuggery and mindless violence, which have marred elections and the pursuit of political power in Kogi State. The organization expressed confidence in the government’s sincerity to end the senseless killings orchestrated by political factions in the state.
Onekutu emphasized the significance of the upcoming election, marking the first to be conducted under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s supervision. He urged the government to assure the citizens of the safety of their lives and well-being not only during the election but also at all times. This, he believed, would enable the people to actively contribute to the nation’s rapid economic growth.
