Russian President Vladimir Putin recently engaged in a private meeting with Burkina Faso’s interim military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, which has raised intrigue and speculation. While the specifics of the meeting remain unclear, there are conjectures that this meeting is part of Putin’s broader strategy to engage with French-speaking West African nations that are currently under military rule.
A brief video clip capturing the encounter was shared on social media by Jackson Hinkle, who noted, “Putin held a private meeting with the world’s youngest leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso.”
Captain Ibrahim Traore assumed leadership in Burkina Faso following a coup on September 30, 2022, which led to the removal of interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.
As neighboring countries Mali and Burkina Faso pledge their support to Niger, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum for the junta to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The deadline has since passed, prompting ECOWAS leaders to schedule a meeting on Thursday to determine their next course of action. The unfolding dynamics in the region continue to draw international attention and concern.
