The Maritime Police Command has recovered 287 stolen empty containers belonging to Maersk Line Nigeria, MSC, and other shipping companies.
A kingpin, Izuchukwu Udeogu, arrested in connection with the stolen containers has also been charged to Court.
The AIG in charge of the Maritime Command, AIG Susan Akem-Horsfall, disclosed this at a press briefing on Thursday in Lagos.
Similarly, men of the Command intercepted a 40ft container with number MRSU-5797660 on Friday, August 18, 2023, at about 11:30 pm, following credible intelligence.
AIG Horsefall said information revealed that the container was cleared with forged documents in connivance with allied security agents at the port.
The document recovered from the suspects read that the contents of the container are as follows; two used Toyota Hiace buses with chassis numbers TRH2019043526 and TRHU2002467311 and 650 packages of used auto spare parts and engines.
Two suspects, identified as 43-year-old Obiora Udenkwo and 49-year-old Chika Igwingu, were arrested.
AIG Horsefall noted that on interrogation, they confessed that there was no vehicle inside the container, rather laden with Robert Soap and that the documents were doctored.
They will be charged to the Court for prosecution upon the completion of investigations.
“This unpatriotic attitude of these individuals is a deliberate attempt to hamper the economic growth of this country as well as sabotage the efforts of the President in boosting the economy and the finance base of Nigeria,” she intoned.
