The Nigerian music sensation, Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, better known as Oxlade, recently revealed a surprising chapter from his past – he used to sleep at the Ojuelegba bridge in Lagos during his early struggles.
The singer shared his challenging journey, stating, “Back then, I used to sleep at Ojuelegba barrack bridge sometimes. I did several menial jobs to survive. I was selling BRT tickets.”
Despite being the son of a lecturer, Oxlade’s pursuit of music was met with opposition from his father. This led him to take on various odd jobs to sustain himself, ultimately leading him down a path of determination and resilience.
Reflecting on his musical approach, Oxlade emphasized the importance of taking time to craft songs. He said, “If you don’t take your time to create some songs or create anything, it’s gonna sound rushed. If you rushed in, you rushed out.”
Rather than chasing instant hits, Oxlade aims to create timeless classics. He pointed out the longevity of his songs like “Away” and “Ku Lo Sa,” which continue to resonate with audiences even years after their release.
In contrast, he mentioned artists who experienced quick success but faded just as fast. Oxlade’s goal isn’t mere impressiveness; he strives to leave an indelible mark on his audience’s minds with his music.
