The Ogun State Government on Tuesday, began the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures in the state.
The demolition took place in Kara along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The task force carrying out the demolition that the shanties and makeshift structures argued that the structures disfigure the corridor and were considered hideouts for criminals in the area.
According to the Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Environment, Hon. Farouq Akintunde, who led the operation, the exercise was to position the state as the industrial hub of Nigeria.
He noted, “Ogun State has a role to play in the economic advancement of the nation. The DGSGD is known as a tourist center. No serious investor will come here and partner with us with all these kinds of shanties and garbage.”
Reports say faeces and dirt littered the road median along the corridor and under the Kara bridge.
Reports further said the heavy presence of security operatives prevented any breakdown of law and order although there was a mild opposition to the operation by some protesters.
