Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has relieved Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, of her duties, marking another key change following the government’s cabinet reshuffle last month.
The decision, announced on Monday through a presidential decree, comes at a time when Kyiv is intensifying efforts to secure additional Patriot air defence systems from Washington to strengthen its protection against ongoing Russian attacks.
In a Facebook post, Stefanishyna shared the letter requesting her release from office, saying the decision was made for personal reasons.
She described her assignment in Washington as the greatest honour of her career and highlighted the achievements recorded during her tenure.
“We increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support precisely when the political climate in Washington was shifting against us,” she said.
Stefanishyna, who previously served as Ukraine’s deputy prime minister and justice minister, was appointed ambassador to the United States in July 2025.
The diplomatic post is regarded as one of Ukraine’s most important foreign assignments because of the country’s heavy reliance on American military assistance and intelligence support in its war with Russia.
Relations between President Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump have experienced periods of tension, although recent engagements have shown signs of improved cooperation.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian media reports say Stefanishyna is being investigated by the country’s anti-corruption agency over alleged misconduct. However, no formal charges have been filed against her.
President Zelensky has yet to announce who will succeed her as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.
