Sowunmi was arrested while trying to deliver the substance to her son, Dare Sowunmi, an inmate on death row at the facility.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Odukoya, the woman was arrested at about 1:33 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, during routine screening at the facility’s main entrance.
He said correctional officers discovered a substance suspected to be “Colos”, a synthetic psychoactive drug, concealed inside a sachet of a popular beverage powder.
Odukoya said the substance was intended for the inmate.
Following the discovery, officers detained Sowunmi and handed her over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution in line with established inter-agency procedures.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, commended the officers for their vigilance and strict enforcement of security measures at the facility.
Adesina reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards the introduction of drugs and other prohibited items into custodial centres.
He said the facilities were established to protect the public while providing opportunities for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
The controller warned that anyone who attempts to compromise security within correctional facilities would face appropriate legal action.
The command urged members of the public to comply with regulations governing visits and interactions with inmates, stressing that attempts to introduce contraband into custodial centres would not be tolerated.
