Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave following approval by President Bola Tinubu, marking his first official break since taking office on May 29, 2023.
The development was announced on Thursday in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.
According to the statement, Shettima will use the period for study, reflection and intellectual development aimed at enhancing his capacity for public service.
Nkwocha explained that the leave will also provide the Vice President with an opportunity to assess the administration’s ongoing programmes, broaden his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues and prepare for future responsibilities as the Federal Government advances the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Since assuming office, Shettima has played a key role in coordinating several government initiatives, particularly in the areas of economic growth, food security, humanitarian response, digital innovation, job creation and regional cooperation.
He also chairs the National Economic Council, where state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other key government officials deliberate on economic policies and national development.
The Vice President has equally represented President Tinubu at several regional and international engagements, including the G20 and AU-EU summits, while the President remained in Nigeria to oversee pressing national security issues.
The Presidency said Shettima remains committed to supporting the administration’s goals of promoting national development, security and economic prosperity.
He is expected to resume official duties at the end of the two-week leave, on or around August 20, 2026.
