Nigeria’s media industry is set for a major milestone as distinguished personalities, including former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (GCFR), and Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, prepare to gather in Lagos for the public presentation of The Vanguard Chronology: 40 Years of Nigeria’s Leading Tabloid.
The commemorative publication, put together by the Vanguard Media Alumni Association, chronicles the newspaper’s four decades of reporting, documenting key national events and shaping public discourse since its establishment.
The public presentation, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Grandeur Event Centre, Oregun, Lagos, is expected to attract prominent figures from government, the media, the business community and civil society in celebration of Vanguard’s enduring impact on journalism and nation-building.
Chairman of the Vanguard Media Alumni Association, Pastor Eyobong Ita, said the publication is a tribute to the men and women whose dedication helped build one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers.
According to him, the book captures landmark investigations, editorial achievements and defining moments that reflect Vanguard’s role in chronicling the country’s political, economic and social evolution over the past 40 years.
He also noted that the event will honour the newspaper’s Founder and Publisher, Mr. Sam Amuka, whose 91st birthday was celebrated on June 13, describing him as one of the most respected figures in Nigeria’s media industry.
As part of the programme, IGP Disu will deliver the keynote address titled, “Fighting Insecurity in Nigeria: The Need for Media Collaboration,” where he is expected to emphasise the importance of stronger cooperation between the media and security agencies in tackling crime and other security challenges.
Former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, will chair the occasion, while veteran journalist and former Editor of The Punch, Dr. Gbemiga Ogunleye, will review the book.
Ita said the publication goes beyond recounting the history of a newspaper, describing it as a valuable record of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the contributions of journalists, editors, photographers and other media professionals who helped shape Vanguard’s legacy.
He added that the event will feature the official unveiling of the book, goodwill messages from notable guests and recognition of individuals whose contributions have sustained Vanguard’s reputation over the years.
Copies of The Vanguard Chronology: 40 Years of Nigeria’s Leading Tabloid will be available for public purchase immediately after the presentation.
