Trump announced the directive on Tuesday shortly after Parton’s death was confirmed, describing the singer as one of the greatest country music performers of all time.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the flags would be lowered nationwide from 6:00pm on Tuesday.
“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” Trump wrote.
“In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you,” he added.
Parton’s death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in a video shared on her official Instagram account on behalf of the Parton and Owens families.
The family has yet to disclose the cause of death.
Her death came days after she spoke about health difficulties that had affected her ability to attend some public engagements. She had earlier cancelled plans to appear at the opening of a new attraction at her Dollywood theme park after her doctor advised her against travelling.
In a video message to her fans, Parton said she had been dealing with health issues that sometimes left her feeling dizzy and dehydrated.
In an interview with PEOPLE published on August 21, four days before her death, the singer also revealed that her health had deteriorated following the death of her husband, Carl Dean, in March 2025.
Parton said she had been dealing with health problems she had previously neglected while caring for Dean, but maintained that she intended to continue working despite her condition.
Following her death, Seaver said the family was drawing strength from their faith and believed Parton had been reunited with her late husband and other deceased relatives.
Parton’s immediate family is expected to hold a private funeral service. The family has also requested that anyone wishing to honour her memory donate to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library instead of sending flowers.
Parton leaves behind one of the most influential careers in country music, spanning more than five decades.
She sold more than 160 million albums worldwide and became the best-selling female country music artist in history. Her achievements included 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Her death marks the loss of one of the most recognisable and influential figures in American music.
