Retiring Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 5, Salman Dogo-Garba, has urged serving police officers to uphold integrity, professionalism and courage, reminding them that an officer’s legacy is defined by character rather than rank.
Dogo-Garba gave the charge on Wednesday during his pull-out parade at the Police Training School, Ogida, Benin City, where he formally retired from the Nigeria Police Force after a distinguished career.
Addressing officers at the ceremony, the former Zonal Commander encouraged them to wear the police uniform with pride and remain committed to the core values of the Force while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
“To every officer still in service, I encourage you to wear the uniform with pride and honour. Let your conduct always reflect the core values of the Nigeria Police Force. Be courageous in the discharge of your duties, compassionate in dealing with members of the public, and resolute in protecting the lives and property of our citizens.
“Remember that the true legacy of an officer is measured not by rank, but by character, integrity, and the positive impact made on society,” he stated.
The retired AIG also reflected on his time in office, describing his tenure as one of the most rewarding periods of his policing career. He said the successes recorded in combating crime across Edo and Delta states were made possible through the collective efforts of officers and the support of critical stakeholders.
Dogo-Garba expressed appreciation to the governments of Edo and Delta states, particularly Governors Monday Okpebholo and Sheriff Oborevwori, for their cooperation and timely interventions, which he said strengthened the operational capacity of the police in the zone.
He also thanked traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, civil society organisations, the media and residents of both states for partnering with the police to maintain peace and public safety.
According to him, security is a collective responsibility that requires sustained collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public.
Dogo-Garba said he was leaving the Force with cherished memories and a sense of fulfilment, adding that he would continue to support efforts aimed at promoting peace, justice and national development.
The ceremony attracted senior police officers, heads of sister security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other dignitaries from Edo and Delta states.
