President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of veteran journalist and former diplomat, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, who died at the age of 86.
Tinubu described the late Cole as a distinguished Nigerian whose contributions to journalism, diplomacy, politics and public service played a significant role in the country’s development.
The President’s condolence message was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to Tinubu, Cole dedicated his life to serving Nigeria and demonstrated the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and diplomacy in promoting national progress and international relations.
He particularly highlighted Cole’s contributions to the media industry, recalling his tenure as Managing Director of the Daily Times, where he played a role in promoting press freedom and democratic accountability.
The President noted that the media executive understood the responsibility of journalism to hold public officials accountable, challenge those in power and strengthen democratic institutions.
Tinubu said Cole’s legacy would remain an important part of Nigeria’s history, given his involvement in several defining periods of the country’s development.
He added that the late ambassador’s life demonstrated the value of experience, principled engagement and unwavering commitment to the public good.
The President extended his condolences to Cole’s family, friends, colleagues and others who mourned his death, praying that they would find comfort in the memories of his contributions to the nation.
