President Bola Tinubu on Thursday received the outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The visit comes as Touray prepares to complete his tenure as head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission after serving the regional bloc for four years.
Dr Touray was accompanied to the meeting by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye. Although the Presidency did not disclose the details of their discussions, the meeting is believed to be part of engagements ahead of the conclusion of Touray’s tenure.
Touray became President of the ECOWAS Commission in July 2022 after he was nominated by The Gambia and endorsed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. During his tenure, he oversaw the commission’s efforts on regional integration, peace, security and economic cooperation across West Africa.
Before assuming the ECOWAS role, the Gambian diplomat served as his country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and later as Foreign Affairs Minister. He also worked with the Islamic Development Bank before returning to regional public service.
Touray is expected to hand over the leadership of the ECOWAS Commission following the expiration of his four-year term.
