The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of three Islamic clerics abducted by armed bandits while travelling to Talata Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

The clerics were among six Imams kidnapped on September 12 along the Dakko-Damri feeder road, near Sububu Forest in Bakura Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Bello, confirmed their rescue while speaking with selected journalists in Gusau on Friday.

Bello attributed the successful operation to collaboration among the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.

He said security operatives were continuing efforts to locate the remaining three victims and apprehend the kidnappers, adding that intelligence from residents was supporting the ongoing operations.

The clerics were abducted at about 11:30 a.m. while travelling to attend a special prayer gathering in Talata Mafara for President Bola Tinubu and his administration.

The abducted clerics were identified as Imam Yahuza, Magawata Abdullahi, Malam Shehu Dakko, Imam Bala Fagon and Na’ibi Tasi’u. The sixth cleric was not identified.

Their abductors had reportedly demanded a ransom of N30 million for their release.

A senior security operative involved in the rescue operation disclosed that the three clerics were freed unharmed following intelligence-led operations.

They were subsequently subjected to medical examinations and security debriefing and were said to be in stable condition.

Arrangements were also being made to formally hand them over to the Zamfara State Government for reunion with their families.

The police command assured residents that operations would continue until the remaining captives were rescued and those responsible for the abduction brought to justice.

It also urged members of the public to provide security agencies with credible and timely information to support efforts to tackle kidnapping and other criminal activities across the state.
