Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance on Tuesday night, defeating Egypt 6-2 in Casablanca to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The nine-time African champions, who needed victory to guarantee qualification after suffering an opening defeat to Malawi and beating Zambia in their second group match, produced an impressive attacking display at the Stade Larbi Zaouli.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 21st minute when star striker Asisat Oshoala converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review confirmed a handball offence.
The Super Falcons extended their lead in first-half stoppage time through substitute Gift Monday, who netted her first goal of the tournament to make it 2-0.
Egypt reduced the deficit moments before the break after Nadine Ghazi converted a penalty, also awarded following a VAR intervention, as Nigeria went into half-time with a 2-1 advantage.
The Falcons resumed the second half strongly and restored their two-goal lead in the 57th minute when Uchenna Kanu capitalised on a defensive error to score Nigeria’s third goal.
Nigeria continued to dominate proceedings and earned another penalty after a VAR review. Midfielder Christy Ucheibe calmly converted in the 81st minute to put the Falcons 4-1 ahead.
Ghazi grabbed her second goal for Egypt three minutes later, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Nigeria won a fourth penalty late in the game.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade confidently converted from the spot in the 91st minute to make it 5-2 before turning provider in stoppage time, setting up Joy Omewa, who sealed the emphatic victory with Nigeria’s sixth goal in the 94th minute.
The Super Falcons controlled much of the encounter, enjoying 59 per cent possession and creating numerous chances in a relentless attacking display.
The match also witnessed several bookings, with Egypt’s Essam H., Menna Tarek and Nour Abdelwahed cautioned, while Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu received yellow cards. Egypt coach Mohamed Kamal was also shown a booking.
The emphatic victory sends Nigeria into the quarter-finals with renewed confidence as the Super Falcons continue their quest for another continental title.
