A section of the Sokoto Central Market was on Sunday night gutted by fire, destroying several shops, goods and other valuables.

The fire reportedly broke out at about 8:30 p.m., causing panic among traders and residents who rushed to the scene to salvage their belongings and prevent the flames from spreading.

Firefighters were deployed to the market and commenced efforts to bring the situation under control, while residents and traders also assisted in evacuating goods from the affected shops.

The cause of the fire remained unknown as of the time of filing this report.

Authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while firefighting operations were still ongoing.
