The Senate has called on the Nigeria Police Force and the judiciary to ensure that those responsible for the recent attacks in Takkas District of Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State are arrested, prosecuted and made to face the full weight of the law.
The upper chamber also urged the Inspector-General of Police to strengthen security operations in the affected communities by establishing additional Police stations and deploying more personnel to complement existing security formations.
The resolution follows the adoption of a motion titled “Urgent Need to Upscale Security Operations in Takkas District of Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, sponsored by Senator Diket Plang (Plateau Central).
Presenting the motion, Senator Plang lamented the recurring farmers-herders clashes across Plateau State, saying the violence has claimed several lives and destroyed property in different local government areas.
He drew attention to the latest incident in Takkas District, where two farmers, Samson Renkat and Fwangyil Samson Adam, were allegedly killed on their farmlands after attempting to prevent cattle from destroying their crops.
The lawmaker described the attacks as coordinated and brutal, alleging that the assailants used similar methods in carrying out the killings.
He expressed concern that the persistent violence, coupled with inadequate security and porous borders, has continued to endanger lives and livelihoods in the area.
According to him, the growing insecurity has left residents living in fear and unable to engage in farming and other economic activities, posing a threat to food security.
Senator Plang, however, commended the Plateau State Police Command for arresting a suspect and recovering some cattle linked to the perpetrators.
He also praised the Chairman of Pankshin Local Government Area, the Divisional Police Officer, the paramount ruler of the area and community leaders for their efforts in preventing further escalation of the crisis.
As part of its resolutions, the Senate observed a minute’s silence in honour of the two victims, commended the Plateau State Police Command for its swift intervention, and lauded the local authorities and community leaders for helping to restore calm while calling for intensified security measures to prevent further attacks.
