Public servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have announced a three-day warning strike over what they described as the worsening economic conditions confronting workers and their dependants.
The industrial action is scheduled to begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, and run through Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The council announced the decision in a circular dated October 1 and signed by its National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga.
In the circular, the council directed its national and state leadership to immediately mobilise workers across the country for the warning strike.
The decision, according to the council, followed the Federal Government’s failure to respond to demands earlier presented to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.
“Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight of Friday, 2nd October, 2026, to Sunday, October 4th, 2026,” the council stated.
The JNPSNC called on workers across the federal, state and local government services to participate in the action, saying the current economic situation had placed considerable pressure on workers, their families and vulnerable Nigerians.
The council said, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”
It also urged its leaders to commence mobilisation without delay, declaring that “the time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now.”
The planned action is linked to the council’s earlier demands for measures to ease the impact of rising living costs, including a reduction in petrol prices, an immediate wage award and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.
Among its demands, the council had reportedly called for petrol to be sold at N500 per litre, approval of a wage award for workers and the establishment of a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.
The demands come amid continued concerns over the rising cost of essential commodities, transportation and other household expenses, which have affected workers’ purchasing power.
The council directed its members to circulate the strike notice nationwide and expressed confidence in the outcome of the industrial action.
“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the circular stated.
