The weapons were recovered on Friday, August 28, 2026, following intelligence on the activities of suspected criminal elements around Kafi Abu.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, the operation was conducted at about 8:23 p.m. by mobile policemen attached to the 81 Police Mobile Force (PMF), led by the unit’s commander.
The operatives reportedly moved into the bush to confront the suspects. However, upon sighting the security team, the criminals fled into the surrounding forest, abandoning their weapons.
A search of the area subsequently led to the recovery of a GPMG with breech number T1102-20CH00007, identified as a SARSILMAZ SAR762 MT, and an AK-47 rifle bearing breech number 1968M117479.
The police described the recovery as a significant development in efforts to weaken the operational capacity of armed criminal groups and prevent attacks on communities across the state.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, ordered the deployment of additional personnel to the area to intensify the search for the fleeing suspects.
The command has also commenced an investigation into the incident, with further updates expected as the probe progresses.
Faniyan commended the officers involved for their bravery and dedication, assuring residents that the command would continue to strengthen intelligence-led operations and proactive policing across the state.
He also called on residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities to the police.
