The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday launched the maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers in partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA).
The empowerment programme, held at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks in Dei-Dei, Abuja, was themed, “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment.”
The event was hosted by the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, and attended by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; and spouses of junior police officers selected from across the country.
Speaking at the event, IGP Disu described the initiative as a significant investment in the welfare and stability of police families, stressing that the wellbeing of officers is closely tied to the welfare of their households.
He commended the spouses of junior officers for their unwavering support to their families and the Nigeria Police Force, urging beneficiaries to make productive use of the skills and resources provided to achieve lasting financial independence.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, said the initiative demonstrates the Fund’s commitment to improving the economic wellbeing of police families alongside its ongoing investments in police training and infrastructure.
According to him, the vocational training and start-up support were designed to help beneficiaries establish sustainable businesses that would improve household income. He also noted that the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and encouraged participants to build enterprises that would positively impact their families and communities.
In her address, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the programme as a strategic investment in the morale and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force rather than an act of charity.
She noted that strong families are essential to effective policing and national security, while reaffirming POWA’s commitment to working with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to sustain the initiative. She also called on government institutions and private organisations to support similar empowerment programmes.
The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to improving the welfare of its personnel and their families through sustained collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA, and other stakeholders.
