The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with other security agencies, state governments and local communities to combat insecurity and promote lasting peace in the South-East.
This was revealed in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
According to the statement, the commitment was made during the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit held at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Umuahia, Abia State.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, was represented at the summit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, AIG Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka. He was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who represented the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13 Headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State.
The summit was organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), under the theme, “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability.”
Speaking during a panel discussion, AIG Nwonyi emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration among security agencies, enhanced intelligence sharing, community policing, stakeholder engagement and sustained public support in tackling insecurity across the region.
He noted that a coordinated approach involving governments, security institutions and local communities remains critical to restoring lasting peace and stability in the South-East.
In recognition of his contribution to national security and the summit, AIG Nwonyi received an award presented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.).
The summit was declared open by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and attended by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.); the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; representatives of South-East governors; the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; heads of security agencies; senior military and police officers; traditional rulers; religious leaders; and other stakeholders.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to strengthening partnerships with sister security agencies, governments at all levels and community stakeholders to enhance security and promote sustainable peace across the South-East.
