Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, after recovering a pump-action firearm and 50 live cartridges from him in Idemili North Local Government Area.

Ogumba was apprehended on Monday, August 17, 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, during an intelligence-driven operation along Nkpor Road.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrest on Tuesday, saying the operation followed credible intelligence about suspected criminal activities in the area.

According to Ikenga, officers located and searched Ogumba during the operation, leading to the discovery of the pump-action gun and ammunition in his possession.

The police spokesperson said the suspect could not give a satisfactory account of how he obtained the firearm or explain what he intended to use it for.

Ogumba has since been taken into custody as detectives investigate his possible connection to armed robbery and other criminal activities in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, ordered investigators to trace the origin of the firearm and determine its intended purpose.

He also directed the police to examine whether the suspect has links to criminal groups operating within Anambra.

Ama reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations, targeted patrols and sustained tactical efforts to identify and dismantle criminal networks across the state.

The police said investigations are continuing.
